ANTIVIRUS PROTECTION
As of November 2007, there are over 180,000 known threats.
Threats are considered to be viruses, trojans, worms, and
potentially unwanted programs (PUPs). There a many hoaxes as
well. It is important to not spread emails that warn of
viruses before verifying they are valid. Sending an invalid
virus threat email to all of your address book is like a virus
sending an email.
The following is a more detailed description of virus threats:
-
Virus
- A program or code that replicates itself onto other files
with which it comes in contact. Viruses are often disguised
as
games or programs. They can also come via email.
-
Worm
- Viruses that reside in the active memory of a computer and
duplicate themselves. They may send copies of themselves to
other computers via email, network connections and other
means. They can come through operating system exploits,
meaning a security hole that Microsoft may have missed.
That is why it is good to install windows updates on a
regular basis.
-
Trojan
– A malicious program that pretends to be something that
it’s not. Trojans cause data destruction or compromise a
computer by providing a means for another computer or person
to gain access. Trojans are not necessarily considered a
virus since they do not replicate themselves but they are
just as harmful. Trojans can come from emails and places
like free programs downloaded from the Internet.
-
Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP)
- These are usually adware,
spyware or
malware programs.
