NETWORK DESIGN
Designing a proper network infrastructure is key when building a
companies network. Bottlenecks can occur in many areas that can
restrict the performance and slow the productivity of the users.
Depending on the size of a company, having too many services running
on a single server can degrade its abilities. An under powered
firewall can restrict the capabilities of the Internet. Some areas
that need to be considered when designing a network:
- Internet Connection - The speed of your Internet can
be a factor if your your users must transfer files on a regular
basis. If this is not a requirement, then the speed may not be
as important. Reliability is always important. Where
a companies physical location is can dictate the type of
connection you have available.
- Firewall - There are dozens of companies that
manufacture firewalls. Having one that can handle your
needs is very important. Most of the lower cost solutions will
not support the number of users of many companies.
- Cabling - The quality of the network cabling is
important with the increasing amount of data needing to be
transferred on a network backbone. Having lower grade data
cables can slow the transfer speed, cause poor performance and
create packet loss.
- Switches - A switch's importance is the often
overlooked when installing a network backbone. It is the traffic
cop of the network and is critical to keep the performance at a
maximum.
- Servers - Servers can have several levels of
performance. The function of the server will dictate its
hardware requirements. A server for print sharing or file
storage can have much lower hardware performance requirements
than an email or SQL server.
