MALWARE PROTECTION
Malware is programs such as
adware that facilitates delivery of
advertising content to the user through their own window and
spyware that have the ability to scan
systems or monitor activity and relay information to other computers
or locations on the Internet. Spyware can gather such information
as passwords, log-in details, account numbers, individual files or
other personal information or documents.
Here are some ways to protect
yourself against getting infected with malware programs:
- Have up to date Virus
software. Having
virus scanning software is not enough. You need to make sure it
is updating on an almost daily basis. Virus scanning companies
provide updates almost everyday. If you installed it more than
a year ago and have not renewed your subscription, it is most
likely not updating.
- Run malware detection
programs. Microsoft
has a free program called Windows Defender. This can be
downloaded from their website. www.microsoft.com. A company
called Lavasoft makes a good one called Adaware.

- Do not install any free software
unless you know where it came from.
Many of the free programs you find on the Internet install the
ability for adware and spyware to be automatically installed on
your computer. Some well known programs like Precision Time and
Date Manager do this. A good rule of thumb is that if it is
free there are strings attached. The company who wrote it
has to make its money somehow.
- Have proper security
installed on you computer and your network.
Have up to date virus scanning software and malware checking
software. Make sure Windows updates are installed by going to
