DISASTER RECOVERY
For companies that cannot afford to lose data and have lengthy
downtime, a proper disaster recovery plan is important. Of course
the most effective segment of a plan is preventative measures.
Some preventative measure for disaster recovery are:
- Redundant storage systems
- Redundant power supplies
- Sufficient battery backups and surge protection
- Complete data and operating system configuration backups
Even with these areas covered, there are other possible
disasters; a fire for example. In a case such as this, have a
tested backup of data (and preferably the operating system
configuration) offsite at a secure location is critical.
A plan on where and how to acquire the
hardware needed to rebuild the network is also essential.
To determine how much preventative measures should be
implemented, a company should determine the losses accrued during a
normal business hour. From there, it can be established what
costs should be spent to ensure a network is not down longer than
the company can afford.
An example would be if a company could lose $500 per hour if the
network is down during normal business hours. It costs $140 per
month for a remote network
monitoring service. If that service can prevent the
network from being down only one hour for every three month, the
remote monitoring pays for itself.
Some areas to consider when determining monetary loss:
- Employees salary that cannot work during the down time.
- Income lost because work cannot be completed.
- Cost of an IT company to repair the issue.
