2008 Small Business IT Planning Part I

With the hustle and bustle of holiday cheer fast approaching, it’s hardly time to think about reviewing your current IT network infrastructure.  By conducting a thorough review of your current network, you can better identify the needs and appropriate IT budget for the upcoming year.

Successful networks depend on a number of elements and managing those is key to maintaining a dependable and reliable network system.  At INS, we provide a free network evaluation for our clients.  When reviewing a network, we will first conduct a review of the network server.

1)       Hardware Configuration – Is it too outdated?  Computers are like dog years.  Within a
year, a computer  can  be sufficient, but also be considered outdated.

2)       Operating System Configuration – Verify this is properly setup.

3)       Server-based Applications – Verify these are configured properly.

4)       Check for an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).

5)       Verify backup system and procedure.

Next, we will take a look at the backbone of a network to ensure all items are working properly and that they are sufficient and not too outdated.

1)       Cabling

2)       Switches

3)       Firewall

4)       Internet Router

Once we’ve completed the initial review of the actual network, we will then review a sampling of workstations to identify any individual problems or issues they may have.

We will then discuss the findings of our assessment with the client and ask additional questions to assist the client in planning for the upcoming New Year.  One of the most important questions we ask our clients is if their current infrastructure network provides solutions that best align with the company’s specific short and long-term goals for the upcoming year.  This is extremely important during the planning process to ensure the current system will be able to handle any unexpected growth (eg. if the company is planning to add additional employees) or technology needs which may be forthcoming.

Yearly network evaluation and maintenance is key in keeping your company’s IT system operating at optimum performance.

 Google-Powered Cell Phones

The Google powered-cell phones are expected to hit the markets by mid-2008 but what the search engine giant is truly hoping for is a universal mobile platform.  Google is currently in the process of speaking with mobile phone manufacturer giants LG Electronics and Taiwan's HTC Corporation and wireless service provider T-Mobile.

Google’s goal is to have phones that carry an array of its applications directly available out-of-the-box, like Google Maps, Gmail, and Youtube. It is on track to deliver such tools to phone makers to be available in their internal software package, reaching consumers by mid-2008.
